A project to help shine a light and raise awareness of children in care is staging its opening event in Totnes on Saturday (January 21).

The Exeter-based Five Rivers Child Care have worked with young people to create a short puppet show film called “Don’t Forget Us.”

The film was made in response to the Independent Care Review carried out by the government in 2022, which looked at how to improve the lives of young people who can no longer live with their families.

It was the first review of its kind and was drawn up following discussions with thousands of children in care. The report called for a radical and revolutionary reshaping of the existing child care service.

Youngsters at Five Rivers created the film to bring to life the findings of the Care Review in a fun and accessible way.

The film will be projected onto buildings across the country, kicking off with the Mansion in Totnes on Saturday.

Olivia Doherty, Five Rivers national participation and engagement officer, said: “We don’t want the Government to forget about what children in care told them as part of this review, so we have created a campaign to raise awareness in the hopes that people, society and the government take seriously what they have heard and read about in the Care Review, and that they “Don’t Forget Us!”

Olivia added: “We worked with the young people to create this short film which we will project on building buildings across the country. We would like to be seen by as many people as possible.

The youngsters will also be working alongside local artist Georgie Gilpin, creating mosaics to celebrate their identity as care experienced by young people ahead of Care Day on February 17, when their film will be projected onto buildings in Exeter, Plymouth, Bristol, Salisbury, London, Durham and Liverpool.
