Children who’ve missed out on important play and creative time with others during the Covid-19 lockdown are being invited to try out a new space in Totnes next month. (Feb)
The children’s section of Totnes Library in Fore Street was to have been refurbished in time for a grand opening at Christmas, but this was delayed as the carpet had not been fitted.
Now, thanks to a £1,780 grant from Totnes Rotary and a sponsored nine-mile walk by the library team who dressed as bumblebees for the event which raised £962.80, a brand new carpet is now in place.
The children’s area has been decorated with a nature theme complete with paintings mirroring the views of the surrounding hills, and is versatile enough to run regular groups and activities for all ages, as well as featuring a breastfeeding corner.
The revamp was made possible thanks to a £2,885 community grant from Totnes Town Council, a £1,211 Lotto grant, plus a £100 donation from The Friends of Totnes Library.
The library is holding a grand relaunch on Tuesday February 1 for everyone who supported the revamp, followed by a cosy hygge event for children of all ages on Tuesday February 8 from 4pm to 5pm, featuring crafts, storytime and hot chocolate.
Library supervisor, Eve Ashton, said: “We want to inspire children to be inquisitive of their surroundings and the design of the refit will show views of the Totnes hills outside the library.
“The new look includes plenty of space for them to sit around reading and will be used to run regular groups and activities such as the ever popular bounce and rhyme and tiny tales.
“We also want local charities that support children to use it.
“We hope it plays a crucial part of rebuilding the community following the pandemic.
“We know that across three lockdowns little ones not only missed out on schooling and access to books and learning but also valuable play and creative time with other children.
“We hope we’ll not only be welcoming back our regular young customers but that the new children’s library area will attract new families from Totnes and the surrounding area.”
Eve added: “We would like to thank Totnes Town Council, the National Lottery and the Friends of Totnes Library for their support in completing our project.
“We would also like to send a big thank you to the Totnes Rotary Club for their support in being able to purchase a new carpet.”
