Kingsbridge resident and retired Town Councillor Peter Ralph wants to cement a legacy event that he and his wife Margaret hope will not only bring the community together, but will continue to support a cause close to both their hearts for generations to come.

On the day following Peter and his wife Margaret’s return from holidays in 2020, they discovered that Margaret had been diagnosed with Grade-2 Breast Cancer. Margaret spent the following nine months in surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Thankfully, she received a clear result from her latest Mammogram. Unfortunately, almost exactly a year after Margaret’s diagnosis, Peter was diagnosed with Stage-4 terminal cancer. Peter said: "I discovered in the September of 2021 that I had Stage-4 Cancer in the bile tubes of the Gall Bladder, Liver and Lymph nodes." Determined to "weather this new storm" in the only way they know how Peter and Margaret are now planning a ‘Mammoth’ community-focused event to raise awareness for Cancer Research UK. With Peters background of being Co-organiser for Salcombe Crabfest, the programme of events on the day is steadily growing. From 8.00 am on Sunday, March 6, Walkers who want to participate in the 21k ‘Walk for Cancer’ can register and will receive Hi-Vis Jackets. At 8.30 am, the main walk will begin, which will involve 15 and a half circuits along the promenade in Kingsbridge from

the Town Square to the Crabshell Inn. Paddle-boarders and Canoeists are also invited to complete the 21K, at the same time (via Waterborn Giving Page here: https://www.waterborn.uk.com/event/kingsbridge-21km-sup-for-cancer-research-uk/?fbclid=IwAR39UGZ7aC4WcI-Cr15JRqDQOCkhypIguJAcE2r01yqDPBLcogOnylUShEg&doing_wp_cron=1646409286.4454309940338134765625), and those that wish to take the Light Railway can rest assured that for every trip they take, the proceeds will go directly to Cancer Research UK. From mid-morning, there will be a varied musical programme on the Bandstand and at the Crabshell, which will keep participants spirits high throughout the day. Refreshments will also be available to registered walkers. Peter said: " So far we have people travelling from as far afield as the Isle of Sheppey, Snowdonia and Surrey borders.

For Peter, it’s also something of a reunion, he said: "Some of the people coming down for the walk I first met in Plymouth over 55-years ago when we started at the Nautical College as Trainee Navigating Officers in the Merchant Navy. "Our first reunion was meant to take place two years ago, but it had to be cancelled due to the pandemic. "It will now take place at the walk. "In addition to this, we have a fundraiser who will be walking a half marathon in Canada and raising donations. "In total, there will be six of us who are spread around the UK and one at each end of the globe from here to Australia."
