A TOTNES & Dartington team named the Madri Boys, will be taking on the Torquay United Allstars in an upcoming charity game.

Taking place on Sunday, September 15, gates open at 12:30 for a 14:45 kick-off at Foxhole, Totnes’ home ground.

From a charity raffle to a BBQ and other refreshments, there will be plenty on offer for everyone as well as the football itself.

Money will be raised for three charities, all of which are very close to the heart of T&D. First of all, there is LandWorks, who are based within close proximity of Foxhole. They offer anything from woodwork to pottery classes, designed to build social skills and increase self-worth, for ex-offenders who have recently been released.

Young Lives vs Cancer is the second charity who, as their name suggests, focus on children and their families who are facing or have faced a battle with cancer.

Last but not least is SOS Kit Aid, a charity that donates unused sports kits to disadvantaged children across the world. As of August 2023, they had benefitted a quarter of a million of young people and saved over 1,500 tonnes of C02 emissions, with saving the environment also being at the heart of their ethos.

Those are three great causes who will benefit from the success of this upcoming football fixture and there are some star-studded names set to feature as well.

Salford-born Richard Eckersley was subbed on in the place of Gary Neville to make his Premier League debut in 2009. During his time across the pond, he also featured in the same New York Red Bulls squad as the likes of Tim Cahill, Thierry Henry and Bradley Wright-Phillips.

Eckersley is now a business owner in Totnes and he could potentially feature for the Madri Boys.

On the other team, Torquay’s All-Stars, there are a number of players to have starred for The Gulls in the last decade or two.

In between the sticks is Martin Rice, a goalkeeper who made more than 50 appearances for Exeter City and wasn’t far short of reaching 100 in the colours of Torquay.

Chris Hargreaves did reach triple digits as a United player and also featured for local rivals Plymouth Argyle- the former Everton youngster even returned to Plainmoor for a managerial stint and so is a popular figure around those parts.

The last player to mention is Ben Gerring who played for Torquay up until quite recently and was born and raised in the area as well.

Madri Boys will be represented by a number of former T&D players as well as a few wildcards so it promises to be an intriguing game.

Go along and enjoy a Sunday afternoon of fun, after all, it is for a good cause!
