VOLUNTEERS are celebrating after raising almost £1,000 for Children’s Hospice South West at their Christmas Fair in Dartmouth’s Old Market last Saturday, December 4.
CHSW volunteer Sue Tweed said: “Through sunshine, rain, hail and wind, the market was less busy than previous CHSW events but full of lovely stalls selling all sorts of desirables, including cakes, cards, crafts, wreaths, jewellery, driftwood art, books and more.”
Balloon sculptures were provided by Dartmouth’s Town Crier, Lez Ellis, dressed as a Christmas elf, and Sue said a wonderful performance was given by the children’s Dashing Devon Dukes ukulele band to boot, some playing for the first time.
Sue added: “Our thanks to everyone who helped us to raise the wonderful amount of £963.91 for Children’s Hospice South West, especially all our brilliant stallholders and the generous buyers, donors and supporters who helped us to make this such a successful event.
“We’re very proud that this amount takes the total our small group has raised since April this year, despite Covid, to an amazing £16,204. Thank you and well done to everyone who has helped in any way.”
The money raised by the group helps Children’s Hospice South West to provide essential specialist care and support for over 500 South West families with life-limited children. CHSW is the only children’s hospice in the South West, where the care offered in all three hospices is not simply about medical and nursing care for sick children, but also about making the most of short and precious lives, while creating special memories and supporting every member of every family. It costs around £11 million to run each year, relying almost entirely on voluntary contributions.
Dartmouth and District Friends Group organises events locally to raise money and awareness for this vital charity.
Sue said: “Volunteers are always welcome - any help, if just a cake for an event, is much appreciated.”
