OVER the weekend of September 7 and 8, the final matches for all the various club competitions took place at Totnes Bowling Club.

The competitions had run through the season with the finalist being whittled down over a number of rounds. Competitions consisted of various bowling formats in some cases with only two woods per player and up to four woods.

One competition was played according to Australian rules which involved three sets of seven ends and it was of particular importance as this was a new competition called the Ernie Knight Trophy, dedicated to a long-serving member of the club who sadly passed away during the current season.

Ernie was a long-standing member helping in managing the club bowling green and is sadly missed. The finals weekend was completed despite the somewhat inclement weather but most matches were completed with too much rain spoiling the event.

There were 12 trophies awarded during the weekend with one member, Ian McLean, achieving considerable success, taking four of the men’s trophies. Ian won the Men’s Club Championship, the Club Handicap Cup, the Men’s Two Wood Championship and together with his partner Paddy Harris, the newly dedicated ‘Ernie Knight Trophy’.

Other competitions were Jane’s Trophy, Ladies 3 Wood, Ladies Handicap Trophy, Ladies Pairs, Men’s 3 Wood Cup, Men’s Pairs, Novices Cup and Mixed Triples Cup. Details of all the winners and runners-up with photographs can be accessed on the bowls club website.
